What is Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a chronic disease that results in a build-up of lymph fluid (swelling) that occurs when the lymph system is either faulty or damaged. There are many causes, but the most common is cancer treatments that remove or damage lymph nodes or lymph vessels. There is no cure for lymphedema, but it can be effectively treated.

The typical treatment for lymphedema is a combination of complex therapies known as Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This treatments are divided in to Phases. Phase 1 is Edema Reduction, and Phase 2 is Maintenance.
Millions of Americans go undiagnosed and untreated for Lymphedema. 10% of the Lymphedema cases are Primary, and 90 % are Secondary.
The purpose of MLD is to stimulate the pulsation of the lymph vessel walls, accelerating drainage of the lymph in the vessels that are still functioning. Also MLD have many benefits for many other disorders.
